अक्सर जब मैं जलवायु परिवर्तन की बात करती हूँ तो लोग मुझसे पूछते हैं -- हम इस समस्या के बारे में क्या कर सकते हैं? मैं सब से पहले उन सब लोगों का धन्यवाद देना चाहती हूँ। निस्संदेह ही सबका योगदान ज़रूरी है। परंतु मैं सबको यही सुझाव देती हूँ कि निस्वार्थ भावना से कुछ भी करने के पहले इस समस्या के बारे में कम से कम १-२ महीने पढ़े, सोचें, चर्चा करें। वैसे तो इस समस्या के इतने पहलू हैं कि १-२ महीने में सब कुछ समझना असम्भव है, पर एक अच्छी शुरुआत की जा सकती है। बिना समझे कूच करने से ग़लतियाँ हो सकती हैं। तो शुरुआत कहाँ से की जाए? कुछ सवाल सबके मन में आते होंगे: जलवायु परिवर्तन क्या है? जलवायु परिवर्तन "समस्या" क्यों है? ये परिवर्तन हो क्यों रहा है? इसके क्या समाधान हैं? मेरे विचार में कोई भी राय बनाने के पहले ये चार पहलू ज़रूर समझ लेने चाहिए। ये हर संवाद की बुनियाद हैं। जब आप इन चार पहलुओं को समझ लेंगे तब आगे का रास्ता अपने आप साफ़ हो जाएगा। इस लेख में पहले सवाल पर चर्चा करते हैं, होशंगाबाद (मध्य प्रदेश) का उदाहरण लेकर। आख़िर क्या है "जलवायु परिवर्तन"?
